10 Simple Ways to Experience the Best of West Bay

West Bay is on Dorset’s beautiful Jurassic Coast. It is a place where dramatic cliffs meet a golden beach, fishing boats bob in the harbour and the sea stretches towards the horizon. Visit on a sunny summer’s day or enjoy the peace of a quieter winter afternoon. There is something special about this corner of the coast.

1. Take in the Views from the Pier

For me, one of the best places to pause is on the pier. Look back towards East Cliff, with the Jurassic Coast stretching into the distance. Or there is the view towards Golden Cap in the other direction. Take a moment to breathe in the salty air, watch the waves and appreciate the sheer scale of the landscape.

2. Watch the Cliffs Change Colour at Sunset

As the sun sinks towards the horizon, the sandstone cliffs can take on beautiful shades of gold, orange and red. The changing light creates wonderful shadows and textures, revealing details you might miss during the day. It is one of my favourite times to photograph West Bay.

3. Enjoy the Beach

West Bay’s golden beach is a lovely place to slow down. Whether you fancy a gentle stroll, a paddle or simply sitting and watching the sea. On a calm summer’s day, enjoy the warmth and tranquillity. On a windy day, feel the exhilaration of the crashing waves and the power of nature.

4. Wander Around the Fishing Harbour

Take a leisurely stroll around the harbour and watch the fishing boats coming and going. Enjoy the sounds, sights and atmosphere of this working coastal community.

5. Relax Over a Coffee

West Bay has cafés, pubs and restaurants where you can take a break and watch the world go by. Find a favourite spot, enjoy something delicious and give yourself permission to linger a little longer.

6. Browse the Shops and Market

Explore the local shops and the market at Customs House. You never know what you might find, from a special souvenir to a gift that reminds you of your time on the Dorset coast.

7. Discover West Bay by Boat

If you want to see the coastline from a different perspective, look out for boat tours and fishing trips. Seeing the cliffs rise above you from the water offers another way to appreciate the scale and beauty of the Jurassic Coast.

West Bay is a wonderful starting point for a coastal walk. Follow the South West Coast Path to discover more of Dorset’s dramatic scenery, taking your time to stop, look around and enjoy the journey.

If you are a fan of the television series Broadchurch, you may recognise West Bay’s distinctive cliffs, harbour and coastal views.

10. Pause and Appreciate the Power of Nature

As you look more closely at the cliffs you will see that the coastline is always changing. Erosion, falling rocks and crashing waves are reminders that this landscape is shaped by nature. It is a humbling sight, and a wonderful reason to appreciate the moment you are in.
